Interpolations

The Interpolations project was conceived as a project for the light art festival KRS Lyskunst in Kristiansand, Norway in 2026. The idea behind the installation is that the sea and rivers hold a significant place in Norway and Norwegian culture, having connected people for millennia. They sustain life by providing food, and have enabled contact between continents and cultures.

In this project, luminous strands submerged in the water reveal the river's currents; they demonstrate that water is not merely a static presence, but illustrate how the flow through the water carries currents and life from one place to another — much like the way water has facilitated global transport since ancient times.

The name Interpolations signifies that the smooth path between points can be a beautiful curve. We find interpolations in mathematics, physics, data analysis, animal behavior, and it's also visible in the curves such as in the flow ow water. The glowing strands in the river will symbolize the interpolations around us.

In a turn of events, the project premieres at Elvelangs light and art festival in Oslo in September 2026. It will be submerged in the river Akerselva, which has provided energy, food and infrastructure for the capital of Norway since the dawn of time. Around 40.000 people attend the festival every year.

Music

The music for this art piece has been composed by German Camacho aka G3RM. We tried to create a cinematic piece seemingly without start and end, and without a clear rhythm. Inspiration for the music has been timeless classics like the work by Jean Michel Jarre, FSOL, and Ennio Morricone, but also new sounds like Carbon Based Lifeforms and Deadmau5.

Technology

The glowing light strands in the water are EL-wire. They are a type of cold light that work by oscillating an AC current around a copper wire with a phosphor coating. The color comes from the coating itself. Each light is individually controlled by the volume of the sounds around the installation, and by a Raspberry Pi mini-PC that has been specifically programmed to analyze the music and control the lights. It behaves a little bit like a DMX. Everything is powered locally and is fully movable to any location.
